Review: Lover at last by J.R. Ward

5 Stars

Qhuinn, son of no one, is used to being on his own. Disavowed from his bloodline, shunned by the aristocracy, he has finally found an identity as one of the most brutal fighters in the war against the Lessening Society. But his life is not complete. Even as the prospect of having a family of his own seems to be within reach, he is empty on the inside, his heart given to another....

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: it seems Qhuinn has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young. It’s hard for Blay to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. And Qhuinn needs to come to terms with some dark things before he can move forward…

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.

Hi Everyone!!

   So my break lasted a bit longer than expected. We are officially moved into the new house (although we are STILL waiting on new furniture to be delivered). While moving I lost my Grandmother, she was 81 years old and I already miss her deeply, but I know she is finally at peace.

   I was able to read a few books and I will be trying to write up reviews this week  and start posting ASAP. Meanwhile, here are the links to what I was reading while I was away and what I am currently reading.

CURRENTLY READING (ARC) Available for Pre-order Release day April 29, 2013

Happy Reading everyone!

Blog Tour: Sword's Call by C.A, Szarek

4 Stars

For generations, the Ryhans, ruling family of the Province of Greenwald have been keepers of a sword rumored to possess enough magic to defeat kings. Lord Varthan, a former archduke and betrayer of the king, covets the sword and invades Greenwald.

   Lady Ceralda Ryhan, daughter of the murdered duke, gains the sword and flees, trusting only her white wolf, Trikser—magically bonded to her. Cera needs nothing more to aid in her fight.

   Jorrin Aldern, half elfin and half human, left his home in the mountains of Aramour to find his human father who disappeared twenty turns before, but finds Cera with Varthan and his shades on her tail instead. His dual heritage and empathic magic will tempt Cera in ways she never thought she’d desire. But can he convince her trust and love can pave the path to redemption or will the epic battle end in tragedy and evil conquer them all?

  My Thoughts; This author is a friend of mine so I was super excited for this book release. I watched her go through the process of submissions to publishers and the whole ordeal so when she was picked up for publishing it was a big SQUEEEEEing moment. That being said I may be just a tiny bit bias. *winkies*

   When I first started Sword's Call I was overjoyed but also nervous. It is a little outside my comfort zone. And is not a genre I am usually pulled toward. It was a little slow for me in the beginning due to learning the new world that I was being introduced to. Once I was got a feel for the characters and the environment everything started to pick up pace. I really did enjoy it and I hope you all will as well.

Continue reading for an excerpt-----

   Heart pounding and fists clenched, Cera sat in the Dragon’s Lair’s darkest corner. By choice, the candle on the table was unlit. The bowl of stew half eaten, food the last thing on her mind.
   The door to the tavern swung open. Her white wolf growled low and deep beside her. Cera glanced up, squinting in the sudden flood of sunlight. As the door slammed shut and her eyes adjusted to the renewed murkiness, she took in the newest arrival.
   Then she focused on Trikser. She couldn’t have him going for anyone’s throat.
   “Shhh, Trik, it’s okay.” She ran a hand through his fur, smoothing his hackles along the length of his spine. The big wolf looked up at her and licked her hand. One corner of her mouth lifted and she bit back a sigh.
   The only reason the owner of the tavern, Marshek even let him in was because no one else was allowed to enter the Dragon’s Lair if she was inside without him. No one according to Trikser, that is. He’d almost taken the hand off the last guy who’d tried.
   “What’ll ya have?” Marshek barked, revealing his instant dislike of the newcomer.
   She fixed her eyes on the bartender. Then she took a closer look at the man sitting in front of him. His pointed ears betrayed his heritage, but his height suggested he was not of pure blood.
   Marshek was known to be tolerant of elves but he hated what he called half-breeds. Cera could imagine what the grumpy, middle-aged tavern owner was thinking, and it wasn’t friendly.
   She rose, Trikser also immediately rising, awaiting her move. The white wolf was her bondmate and had been since he was young.
   Relax, she thought-sent.
   Trik sat, but his body was tight, tense. He didn’t respond to her mental order.
   Moving to the bar, her wolf followed, slinking close to the floor, moving in a slight crawl. His belly probably touched the filthy planked flooring of the tavern.
   Cera made a face but forced a breath. Detached control. Sliding onto the stool next to the half-elfin man, she was just in time to hear his order. His voice was clear and deep.
   Marshek filled a mug with ale and started to put the jug in its place on the shelf.
   “Wait, Mar,” she said with a wave of her hand, “I’ll have some of that, too.”
   With a curt nod, the older man poured her a mug. She brought it to her lips, glancing nonchalantly at the stranger. His coal black hair brushed the collar of his hooded gray cape, giving him a rather unkempt look, but rugged rather than messy.
   Cera couldn’t see the hue of his eyes from her seat but his high cheekbones made his profile appealing, his sleek tapered ears adding to the attraction. His powerful jaw line was clean shaven, an oddity in these parts. She could tell he was aware of her perusal. He was young, not much older than her, and had the stunning beauty of the elves.
   His chest heaved as if he’d taken a breath, and he finally glanced at her. Blue. His eyes were a deep, sapphire blue. Her heart skipped a beat but she ignored it. The man said nothing, not that she’d expected him to.

    Melissa's thoughts; I loved this book! I fell in love with the characters right away and could not put it down.

   Shane is the perfect guy. He always puts everyone else ahead of himself. He is always trying to protect the ones he cares about, but fights to let anyone get to close to him. That is until Jenn comes along and changes everything.  Could he finally have found someone he can trust to be there waiting for him when his tour is over and help him deal with the walls he has built around himself?

   Jenn has had a tough time trusting anyone since her heart was broken by the ones she trusted the most. She is ready to give up, and has everything planned out to do just that. When the day arrives to carry out her plan, Shane steps into her life. Jenn is face with a decision; can she find it in her heart to trust again? Can she handle being left behind and not knowing where she stands?

   This book and these characters had me going through so many emotions. You will have a few laughs along with shedding a few tears.

   I am having a hard time writing this review because I am afraid to say too much. One or two more words and it could lead everyone to know exactly how it plays out. This was a highly enjoyable book! Now I am off to check out more by Teresa Mummert......

~~~
Thanks again to Melissa for her review!! I will be reading this book as soon as life is back to its boring old routine :)
Blog Tour: Give Me Something by Elizabeth Lee
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Here's the deal... I learned a long time ago that sometimes you have to use what you've got to make things happen. What I happen to have is a pretty smile, long legs and the ability to make men believe anything I say. Before you get on your high horse and start judging me, can you honestly say you've never batted your lashes at some guy for a free drink at the bar? That's what I thought.
   Keep that in mind as I tell you my story of how I took it one step further. My story of lies, deceit, manipulation and love. Yeah, love. Believe me, it fits. Especially, when you factor in Nick and Tucker – one had my heart and the other one wanted it all for himself. Which one? Well, I can't tell you that. It would defeat the purpose of the story. If I'm going to fill you in about me, Lila Garrison, and my life as a con artist you're going to need to know all the facts, including the ones about the two guys who made me want to give up the life of fancy clothes, expensive jewelry, fast cars and easy money. Because sometimes, one person can give you something that's more valuable than all of that.
   If you're still interested, stick around. Just remember, I'm pretty good at convincing people to do what I want, so if by the end of this whole thing you feel worked over, don't say I didn't warn you.

Excerpt:

By the time we made our way out of the club and back to the car, I was pretty sure I knew what Tucker wanted to do. Before he opened my door for me, he pushed me up against the car and let his lips continue to dominate mine. I was about three seconds away from letting him throw me in the back seat and have his way with me.
“Wait,” I panted between labored breaths, “we need to slow this down.” My mind was saying stop, but my hands continued to navigate down his muscular back to the bottom of his shirt. Just as I was about to slip my fingers under it and feel the warmth of his skin on my hands, I stopped, alerting him to the fact that I really wanted to put the brakes on what was happening in a parking lot full of drunk college kids.
“Really?” he asked before letting his lips nip the sensitive skin of my neck. “I was hoping we could speed this along and you'd let me take you back to my place.” He raised his head and greeted me with a sinfully delicious smile.
“As tempting as that sounds...” his hands slid from my waist to the curves of my hips as he returned his mouth to my neck. “And feels...” I felt myself start to succumb to him again and willed my hands to separate us. I knew I had a lot of ground work left to lay if I wanted to get access to his fortune, but all I could think about was being just another conquest to him. I knew he'd dated a lot of women, and whatever it was he was doing to me made me want to be more than the girl doing the walk of shame and never hearing from him again. “Please, we need to stop. I don't want to be...” I trailed off. “We just need to slow down.”
“You're right,” he said, pulling his lips from mine. “You just look so damn good tonight. It's hard to control myself.” It most definitely was hard. I could feel every inch of him as he pulled me closely to him and wrapped his arms around me. “You'll never be one of those girls, Lila. I like you too much already.” I felt my heart skip a beat. Could he read my mind? He placed a soft kiss on my cheek before opening the car door. “Let's get you home.”

Author bio:
After collecting a couple English degrees in the Midwest, Stephanie Lawton suddenly awoke in the deepest reaches of the Deep South. Culture shock inspired her to write about Mobile, Alabama, her adopted city, and all the ways Southern culture, history and attitudes seduce the unsuspecting.
A lover of all things gothic, she can often be spotted photographing old cemeteries, historic buildings and, ironically, the beautiful beaches of the Gulf Coast. She also has a tendency to psychoanalyze people, which comes in handy when creating character profiles.

Be sure to check out the first book in this series...
